The three most common myths about workplace accommodation

  • All employees must be treated equally.
    • Fair does not mean equal; involves offering equivalent tools/measures to create equal opportunities.
  • Accommodations will look like favoritism and affect workplace culture.
    • Workplace adjustments are instruments of equity that level the playing field for people with disabilities.
  • Workplace adaptations are extremely expensive.
    • Most workplace adjustments cost nothing or very little.

Inclusive leadership is important. The more people feel included, the more they speak up, go the extra mile, and collaborate – which ultimately improves organizational performance. As a manager and leader you can:

  • Challenge your own biases and encourage others to do the same.
  • Ask yourself, “If I do or say this, will I risk leaving anyone behind?”
  • Admit mistakes and create the space for others to contribute.
  • Show empathy by trying to understand others and making them feel heard.
