We would like to thank every one who took the time to complete our recent questionnaire on Helping Shape a Conversation for Managers on Values and Ethics with the Clerk. We had an overwhelming 995 responses and those insights and questions will be the foundation of the discussion points for the upcoming Conversation on values and ethics with John Hannaford, Clerk of the Privy Council.

Management of Stress in the Workplace

As managers, can we help employees manage their stress? Can you recognize a stressed employee? Who is more stressed: The boss or the employee? Did you know that your own stress is passed on to your employees?

The Canadian Innovation Centre for Mental Health in the Workplace is proud to welcome Sonia Lupien to offer a session for Managers and Leaders on the Management of Stress in the Workplace.

In this webinar, Sonia Lupien answers all these questions and helps you recognize how your employees respond to stress. She also shows you how stress affects performance.

GC Workplace Accessibility Passport – open information sessions

On February 15 and February 20, the Office of Public Service Accessibility (OPSA) will be hosting open information sessions on the GC Workplace Accessibility Passport. Attendees will learn how the Passport helps employees and applicants with disabilities get the tools, supports, and measures they need to perform at their best and succeed in the workplace and about the anticipated digital version of the Passport. 

These presentations aim to be inclusive. Should you require any accommodation to fully participate, please email the Passport team with your needs in advance. Links to register for the sessions are provided below.

Register your student for the Employment Opportunity for Students with Disabilities program

Have you hired students with disabilities this winter?

Make sure your student knows about and registers to take part in the Employment Opportunity for Students with Disabilities (EOSD) an employee experience-based program for students who self-identify as having a disability and are currently employed by the Government of Canada.

As a manager, you can register your student on their behalf, or provide the registration link to your student so they can register directly (links available only on the Government of Canada network).

Don’t delay as the next event is on February 15, 2023. Once the registration is complete, students will be emailed information about the resources available, including details on events and the mentorship program.

We’re delighted to announce the newest addition to our NMC Secretariat team – Marc Hamilton! As our community continues to thrive, Marc will bring a wealth of experience to lead NMC initiatives in the Atlantic region.

Marc comes to us from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency where he worked as Training Coordinator as well as Issues and Intergovernmental Affairs Officer. Outside of the office, Marc likes to work on a variety of automotive and marine mechanical projects.

Join the conversation Breaking Barriers: Creating a “Disability Confident” Workplace

The Atlantic Diversity Community of Practice (ADCoP) Organizing Committee invites all executives managers, supervisors, team leads, aspiring managers and human resources professionals to a full-day event with the theme Breaking Barriers: Creating a Disability-Confident Workplace. The virtual portion of the event is open to all federal public servants.

It promises to be an impactful day. You will hear from the Clerk of the Privy Council, John Hannaford, the Deputy Minister Champion for persons with disabilities, Tina Namiesniowski, public servants who will share their lived experience, and much more. The afternoon will consist of a workshop with Tova Sherman from reachAbility

When: March 19, 2024, from 8:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Public doors open at 8:15 a.m. AST)

Note that the morning portion will be available virtually.

Where: Shediac Multipurpose Centre, 58 Festival Street, Shediac, N.B.

Need Hotel Accommodations: A block of 40 rooms has been saved at the Hotel Shediac (Belliveau Street). Rooms need to be booked before February 29, 2024, by calling 506-532-6100. When booking rooms, please refer to the Breaking Barriers seminar.

Local students who self-declare as persons with disabilities are invited to attend and will have the opportunity to meet with managers and executives throughout the day. This will allow for some networking and the possibility for summer student hiring.

During the event, departments and organizations will have the opportunity to have a kiosk and be part of a mini career fair for students. Please advise Jill Esson, at Jill.Esson@tpsgc-pwgsc.gc.ca, if your department would like to be part of the mini career fair, there is still room for six kiosks.

Seeking interest to be a part of this year’s 10th annual Atlantic Official Languages Week planning committee

The 10th annual Atlantic Official Languages Week will be held in May 2024. Atlantic OL Week has been a long-standing opportunity for all Federal institutions in Atlantic Canada to showcase their work on OL, to enhance OL understanding, motivation, and to simply celebrate our shared OL richness. In relation to this week, we are seeking new or continued interest to be a part of this year’s planning committee.  

Taking part in organizing this year’s OL week requires the following: 

  • Passion and desire to celebrate Official Languages in our region. 
  • Contribute innovative ideas and assist in planning and delivering different activities. 
  • Potentially lead a sub-committee. 
  • Participate in the weekly team meeting. (In the event that participation is not possible, we would ask that participants find a substitute from their team.) 
  • Approval from your manager/supervisor. 

If you are interested in joining our committee and/or wish to sit as a co-chair, please contact our coordinator, Julia Buckley julia.buckley@servicecanada.gc.ca by Friday February 16th.  Also, please indicate which Atlantic province you are located in.

Facilitated by Patricia Fornarolo, Interim Field Unit Superintendent, Saskatchewan South Field Unit – Parks Canada

Patricia has worked almost 30 years in the federal government, in multiple positions and in different departments. Forever curious, and always needing to be challenged, Patricia has sought out opportunities for change and growth. She had multiple mini-careers in IM/IT at Public Services and Procurement Canada, moved to Health Canada and then Transport Canada to have broad visibility into the workings of the departments, and is now with Parks Canada, doing something she never imagined as part of her career path.

Opening the Door to Mental Health

This year’s Opening the Door to Mental Health symposium will take place on February 27 and 28, 2024. “Open Door” is a two-day, virtual symposium focused on mental health and wellness. This is the sixth year for this event, which is sponsored by the British Columbia Federal Council (BCFC) and organized by the BCFC’s Community of Interest on Mental Health. The theme for this year’s symposium is “Nurturing Humanity in the Workplace: Fostering a Culture of Kindness, Respect and Empathy.” The program will cover two half-days and include a range of speakers and panels providing their advice, perspectives and strategies related to mental health, including how we can all focus on humanity and psychological safety in the workplace.
