The Interest Minded Leader

Have you ever left a conversation believing it was resolved only to have it pop up again and again? Frequently, this is because we haven’t yet addressed the legitimate interests behind our own and the other person’s positions. In this session, you will learn to identify the multiple conversations that run concurrent in each exchange. You will learn common needs and interests associated with each and the strategies and tools that support resolve.

This includes how to:

  • Ask meaningful questions
  • Capture and clarify understanding and meaning
  • Identify and communicate feelings
  • Identify and communicate needs and interests
  • Navigate defensiveness

This isn’t just about employing strategies in conflict situations, but about changing the ways in which you view your own and other people’s motivation. By adopting an interest-based mindset, you will learn to look for what really matters and expand the possible solutions.

You will have the opportunity to practice new skills, consider how they might apply in your unique context, anticipate challenges, and work through diverse staff and stakeholder scenarios.
